These vibrant orange blooms appear in midsummer and are a favorite of monarch butterflies. Butterfly Weed serves as both an egg-laying host plant and an essential food source for monarch caterpillars, making it fascinating to watch the next generation of monarchs grow and thrive right in your garden.

These seeds require a cold period (stratification) to germinate properly. For best results, plant outdoors in fall or winter. If outdoor winter sowing is not possible, place seeds in the refrigerator for 30 days prior to spring planting.

This variety can bloom the first year from seed, though plants typically become larger, fuller, and more impressive by their second growing season. Mature plants reach approximately 25–36 inches tall and thrive in full sun. Butterfly Weed is extremely tough and adaptable, performing well even in clay soils and difficult growing areas once established.

Established plants may also be divided around the third season to create even more plants for your garden.

Hardy perennial in zones 3–9

Full sun preferred

First-year bloomer from seed possible

Excellent for pollinator and monarch gardens

Drought tolerant once established

Great for clay and hard-to-grow soils

Gardens are inspected annually by the Department of Agriculture

Restricted states AK GU HI PR

https://sunshine-valley-garden-llc.myshopify.com/products/butterfly-weed-asclepias-tuberosa-milkweed-orange-seed
